Be Prepared ***CANCELLED***

Be Prepared is a two day team ‘incident hike’ in the Cambrian Mountains. As a five-person team you’ll need to navigate a set course, taking part in physical and mental challenges along the way.

The night will be spent camping in hammocks at a private and secluded campsite in the woods where dinner will be provided around a campfire in the evening. After a satisfying and tiring day there will be the chance to socialise with your fellow challengers.

The charge for this weekend of activities is just £20 a day including food (evening dinner, breakfast and one packed lunch) and camping. That’s £40 per person for the event. If you would like to buy a discounted hammock to take away with you after the event the cost will be £50 in total.

Aside from being a weekend of fun for you and your teammates, this is a competitive event where you will be scored on the activities undertaken and a winning team announced at the end.

Inspiration for the event

Each year, 2nd Penparcau Scout group leaders run a two-day incident hike for children from all around the county. It’s a challenge, but it is also rewarding for those children that take part. Keen to replicate that sense of fun and achievement for adults too, the leaders have decided to run the first adult version of the event named ‘Be Prepared’.

Where does the money go?

All funds raised from Be Prepared will directly fund sending children from 2nd Penparcau Scouts to Holland this summer for an international Jamboree, giving them the chance to meet Scouts from all over the world and to broaden their horizons.

There are some costs associated with running the event such as provision of food and equipment, but the whole things is run by volunteers with support from local businesses.

Please refer to our FAQ’s below for further information about the event.

To book your place on the Be Prepared challenge, please fill in the following form:

Cost is £40 per person which includes provision of activities, any necessary transport during the event, evening dinner, breakfast and one lunch.
Please remember to pay £50 per person instead for those who’d like their very own hammock.

FAQ’s

What do we need to bring?

A full kit list will be provided to each team, but no specialist equipment will be necessary other than sensible outdoors wear for Welsh weather. You’ll need to provide your own packed lunch on day one of the hike. Please bring cash to spend at our evening drinks bar.

What distance will we cover?

We want the event to be a rewarding challenge and also accessible to as many people as possible. We feel that a maximum distance of 25 miles across the whole weekend strikes that balance and we’d urge you to give that a go if it sounds just a little bit tough!

What will we eat?

Our catering team will provide you with a hot dinner and snacks on the Saturday evening as well as a cooked breakfast and packed lunch provisions on day two of the hike. Please let us know your dietary requirements when booking so that we can provide you with exactly what you need.

Toilets

Flushing toilets are provided at the camp site, but please note that toilets may not be available on the walking routes.

We’re travelling from far away – can we stay nearby?

Teams are very welcome to camp at our site by prior arrangement on the Friday night to save them travelling a long distance in the morning. Please notify Kathy (Kathy@penparcauscouts.org.uk) by 11th May if you’d like to do this.

We don’t have five people for our team

We will accept a team of four persons, but as this is a fundraising event we do expect the fifth space to be paid for in addition.

Transport

Please make your own way to and from the camp venue (http://penparcauscouts.org.uk/contact-us/facilities/) and follow advice from the volunteers on where to park. We do advise car-sharing as much as possible. Vehicles can be left at the venue for the duration of the event. We will provide any additional transport needed as part of the event.

Timings

An exact meeting time for the 1st June will be confirmed closer to the time, but please put aside the whole of the 1st and 2nd June to take part in the activity. As previously mentioned, you are welcome to camp up on the site on the Friday night if arranged in advance. The event will only end once all the teams have completed the course, but we will give you an approximate time for that closer to the date.

Cancellation

If your registered team needs to cancel you will receive a full refund as soon as we have found a replacement team. We will have a number of reserve teams to ensure that we have the full complement of teams taking part. If a replacement team cannot be found, a 50% refund will be given.

If you have any other questions about the event, please ask Kathy on Kathy@penparcauscouts.org.uk. Please note that, as a volunteer, Kathy may not be able to answer your emails immediately.
